Positive Behavioral Supports for Safe, Healthy,
and Effective Schools

Bibliography

Crone, D. A., & Horner R. H. (2003). Building positive behavior support systems in schools. NY: Guilford.

This book outlines in detail how schools can set up and use the Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA) to Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) process in schools.

Epstein, M. H., & Sharma, J. (1998). Behavioral and emotional rating scale. Austin, TX: PRO-ED.

The Behavioral and Emotional Rating scale is a strength-based too for assessing the level of risk and protection a child or youth is experiencing.  Teachers have found it useful for assessing their students from a positive perspective, and it can help with intervention planning at the “group” level.

O'Neill, R. E., Horner, R. H., Albin, R. W., Sprague, J. R., Newton, S., & Storey, K. (1997). Functional assessment and program development for problem behavior: A practical handbook (2nd ed.). Pacific Grove, CA: Brookes/Cole.

This is second edition of the original book on conducting functional behavioral assessments (FBA’s) and provides detailed interview and observation forms for use in schools and other environments.

Satcher, D. (2001). Youth violence: A report of the Surgeon General. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

This detailed report outlines the risks and prevalence of youth violence in the United States and outlines a plan of action. The report also provides a list of evidence-based practices to prevent and respond to youth violence and mental health adjustment problems.

Walker, H. M., Ramsey, E., Gresham, F. M. (2004). Antisocial behavior in schools. Pacific Grove, CA: Brookes/Cole.

This book provides a complete and detailed overview of the best we know about intervening in the lives of children and families by using effective, evidence-based practice. It is often used as a textbook in college and university courses.

Walker, H. M., & Severson, H. H. (1990). Systematic screening for behavior disorders: User's guide and administration manual. Longmont, CO: Sopris West.

The SSBD is the best researched tool developed to screen for and determine the support needs of younger children with behavioral challenges, and also allows schools to avoid labeling students who may be presenting challenges, but only need adjustments to their environment (e.g., teaching, routines or schedule) to be more successful.
