New!!! A New Wave of Evidence: The Impact
of School, Family, and Community Connections on Student Achievement
“This publication from SEDL (Southwest Educational Development
Laboratory) is a compilation of 51 research studies since 1995 which
examine parent and community involvement and its role in impacting student
achievement. Each study is described and analyzed including the limitations
of the study. Findings are briefly described and recommendations for
implementing the findings are put forward. The studies are divided into
three categories: 1) Impact of parent and community involvement on student
achievement; 2) Effective strategies to connect schools, families, and
communities; and 3) Parent and community organizing efforts to improve
schools.”

Community Involvement
- “The greatest outcomes were found when parents, students and community organizations were involved together.” (Jordan, Orozco & Averett, 2001)
- These programs must be based upon “mutual respect and interdependence of home, school and community.” (McAfee, 1993)
- “There is no one model that has proven effective in building parent/family involvement programs in schools. Researchers document evidence that programs must be based upon the individualization of the families, teachers, students, and community members involved.” (Brough & Irvin, 2001), Christenson & Sheridan, 2001)
