This self-paced Web module and referenced approach will assist the learner in understanding the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), as amended in 2004, and the components of a performance goal and how this format applies to the mandates of the IDEA.
A step-by-step approach will direct the learner through goals and objectives/benchmarks, their relationship to state content standards, and practical methods of measuring objectives/benchmarks to assure student progress. This series will take approximately 4–6 hours to complete.
Focus will be directed to goals and objectives/benchmarks that are family friendly, using language that communicates to all involved in the implementation of these goals and objectives/benchmarks.
Additional sections have been added about:
• Expanded educational benefit process
• Assessment guidelines for the severe
• The 13 disability categories
• The five compliance requirements for present level of academic achievement
This training was developed, revised, and updated by Diane K. Youtsey, Association of California School Administrators (ACSA).
Special Note: The new requirements for the individualized education program (IEP) became effective on July 1, 2005, as mandated by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act of 2004. IEPs written prior to July 1, 2005, but go in effect during the next school year, must follow the process and procedural safeguards of IDEA 1997, but the IEP contents and the IEP team membership must follow the IDEA provisions.
For more information on the new law, go to the California Department of Education Web page on the 2004 reauthorization of the IDEA: http://www.cde.ca.gov/sp/se/lr/ideareathztn.asp.
