Data: Irvine High School

Our Language Arts CST scores indicated 20% of our students were basic and 10% below basic.  After reviewing the data the staff decided to adopt Read 180 as a research validated practice to assist in meeting the outcome of improved basic reading skills for individual students. In Math, 19% of the students were below basic and an Algebra Tutorial class and Carnegie Math are being implemented for individual students.  The Science (18% below basic) and Social Science (23% below basic) curriculum are now aligned with the state standards and students are taking the class the same year as the assessment.  The staff believes the continued increase in our API scores (2004=800, 2005=828, 2006=848) is directly related to using this database decision-making model and research-validated practices.  This data has allowed us to review groups of students and monitor individual student progress.  The 2006 CAHSEE scores indicate a 97% pass rate for sophomores in English Language Arts (second in the county) and 64% pass rate in Algebra (6th in the county).  The behavioral needs of the student body are addressed in our “Via Vaquero Program”, where all students are taught the expected school-wide behaviors and are reinforced using the “Via Vaquero Card”.  There are regular “Via Vaquero” drawings at pep-rallies, assemblies and during lunch activities for prizes and opportunities for student involvement.  The targeted group intervention indicates an 83-85% improvement rate in the students’ behavior.
