Overview: Irvine High School

Irvine High School is in the third year of implementation as a “Positive Behavior Support” site whose goal is to refine its implementation of research-based prevention principles which foster positive and safe school climate through embedded organizational systems.  Our goal is to bring about systemic change in our school by developing school-wide effective discipline systems that result in improved pro-social outcomes, higher achievement scores, improved school attendance, greater student responsibility and respect.

The Project Success Team (academic and behavior team) meets weekly to review data such as, Office Discipline Referrals, Police Department information, attendance data, academic data, counseling data and special education data.  The Student Study Team meets weekly to review any new referrals from parents, students, teachers, and the academic/behavior team for at-risk students. The Student Study Team also plans staff and student pro-active activities (goal setting, work/study skills, program planning, scholarships, college applications, career development).  Via Vaquero drawings are 1-2 times per month during pep rallies, assemblies, and lunch activities.   E-mail messages are sent to all teachers on a regular basis reminding them of target behaviors, data, and the use of Via Vaqueros in shaping student behavior as well as data updates on attendance/behavior.  Link Crew and Youth Creating Change (student pro-social leadership groups) are involved in activities throughout the year promoting the Integrity, Honor Self and Others and Social Responsibility school-wide expected behaviors.   There are Positive Behavior Support presentations to the PTA and School Site Council by the Principal.  Weekly Principal’s Cabinet meetings review the Positive Behavior Support plan.  Instructional Council (Department Chairs) meets on a monthly basis and positive behavior support is on the agenda reporting and facilitating a discussion of data, needs, and interventions.

The three-tiered model of intervention is being used to meet our goals.  The practice of defining expected behaviors, teaching those behaviors in context, reinforcing the pro-social behaviors and monitoring the effectiveness of the interventions for the school-wide population, the targeted group and the individual student is being implemented.
