Background:
Grade levels served: 6-8

Mesa View Middle School is a very diverse middle school serving students in grades 6-8. Of our 725 students, 28% receive free/reduced-priced lunch, 15% are English learners, 18% are Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) students, and 11% are identified as special education students. Mesa View is also the home of the district GATE magnet program and a shared SELPA severely emotionally disabled program.

Though Mesa View has had a history of excellence and high achievement, a desire to reach all students has driven the staff to look for further intervention. Seven years ago, literacy intervention classes began. Four years ago, the staff revisited and refocused how and which literacy intervention would be implemented. Through ongoing assessments, appropriate placements, targeted intervention programs/strategies, and monitoring, we continue to build upon our model to address students' needs on a continuum of literacy interventions from advanced to intensive levels. Over the last three years our API has increased by 24 points, with significant improvement in our ELA CST scores (see data).
