Overview: Mesa View Middle School
The Mesa View staff strives to meet the needs of the whole child, academically and social-emotionally, to have them safe and connected so that they can achieve their personal best. As a site that already operates with the RtI2 philosophy to academics, our next step was to promote a safe, secure, and positive learning environment across our school. In October of 2008, after attending a PBIS School Team Training Academy, an interdisciplinary team developed a 3-tier model of behavioral interventions and supports. The effectiveness in the approach in evident in the data: in the first full year of our PBIS project implementation, office referrals declined by 27% and suspensions by 54%.
Initially, the school implemented Tier 1: identifying, explicitly teaching and implementing the school wide rules known as the 3Rs: Respect for Yourself, Respect for Others, and Respect for the Environment. A variety of activities have been implemented and institutionalized to help us meet our goals and objectives. For example, throughout the year teachers review the student behavior data to determine specific needs and to develop a plan, by grade level. Teachers are provided with Eagle Wings, a school wide system for recognizing and positively reinforcing specific behaviors related to the 3Rs.
Secondary level interventions (Tier 2) build upon Tier 1 were then developed to provide for students who sometimes struggle with demonstrating appropriate behavior in school.
The tertiary intervention tier (Tier 3), is designed for students who display chronic patterns of disruptive behavior. Intervention at this level involves school specialists and the development of individual behavior plans, for general or special education students.
