Intervention and instructional programs: Reading/English 9 Support class – Two hour block class taught by a Reading and Resource Specialist and an English class taught by an English Teacher. Students are placed in the class based on teacher recommendation, state test scores, and performance in middle school. The program utilizes the Read 180 program and 9th grade core curriculum. English 10 Support – For Reading/English 9 Support students in 10th grade that continue to need support. Taught by an English teacher in collaboration with a Resource Specialist. Algebra Support classes – Taught by a Special Education Teacher for all students who need extra support in Algebra. Science Support classes – Taught by a Special Education Teacher for any student that needs extra support in Science. Study Hall – Nipomo High School implemented a study hall class in the January of 2008 so that students would have a place to complete homework and work with teachers in a particular subject area. Study hall meets two times a week. Many students need time built into their day to complete homework and receive direct assistance from staff. Friday School – Friday School is used for students who do not complete class assignments. Teachers can assign Friday School for students who do not turn in assignments. Behavior Intervention – School-wide positive behaviors are reinforced at the high school. The school’s acronym PRIDE stands for Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Excellence. Students can be rewarded by staff members for behaviors that meet the criteria for PRIDE. Collaboration – Every other Thursday is designated as an Early Out day. Students are released at 12:30 and staff meets to participate in professional learning communities. Teachers work on common assessments and discuss best practices.
