Background and Demographics
Grade levels served: 7 and 8
Set in a suburban community, Spring View Middle School serves 771 7th and 8th grade students as a Title I school. Within Spring View Middle School, students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) have their academic and social goals met through general education classes, the Resource Specialist Program (RSP), and/or two distinct Special Day Classes (SDC) which includes the Independent Living Skills Program (ILS) for students with severe cognitive disabilities.
Recognized as a Distinguished California School in 2005, Spring View Middle School follows an academy model dividing students into small learning communities. Teams of teachers from each of the core subject areas including special education collaborate and work with a group of students for an academic year.
Teacher planning is critical to this model to allow integrated instruction, collaboration in lesson development, student assessment, and the development of interventions for students who need additional assistance and support. Students spend four periods a day in their core curriculum classes within their academies. A fifth period is spent in a reading class. The last two periods are filled through physical education and an elective.
Electives currently available for students included Band, Chorus, Strings, Art, Home Economics, Manufacturing Technology, Introduction to Spanish, and Spanish I.
