Strategies: Valley View Middle School
Valley View has many strategies in place which support the goals of the school.
Referral
and Assessment
The referral and assessment process at Valley
View Middle School reflects strong collaborative efforts between teachers, students,
and parents. The assessment team works to problem solve issues and address the
needs of students efficiently and quickly. The culture of the team is one of
support and understanding. Members constructively work to arrive at a decision
that will best meet the need of the student. The Student Study Teams and collaborative
grade level meetings allows each staff member's expertise and knowledge to be
shared and discussed. The Aeries Student Information System
allows all teachers who share a student to access current grade information from
all that student's classes. This increases the opportunity for early intervention
and a more complete picture of a student's academic progress.

Academic
Intervention
Data-informed decision making is what drives
the program changes and interventions. At Valley View, we have several
academic intervention classes imbedded into our core curriculum. The
collaborative teaching model that has been put in place at Valley View
engages special education students in the general education curriculum.
Our STAR scores continue to rise. and we continue to meet our API &
AYP.
Behavior
Intervention
Behavior Intervention (BEST) Building Positive Behavior Support in
Schools, is the behavior program in place at Valley View. This behavior program
increases effective academic support. It teaches students social skills techniques
and allows them to monitor and learn school wide behavior expectations. At Valley
View. a collaboration of teachers and administrators worked diligently to develop
the program and its implementation. All staff members continue to talk, share,
brainstorm, and evaluate the program during monthly faculty meetings. All sixth
graders are instructed in BEST expectations, and the student planner includes
BEST behavior guidelines. BEST rewards are given by different departments and
grade levels. For example. sixth graders could earn a period of "Chill 'ax
'in" Older students could earn the option to run
their weekly miles with their IPods.
This year, the staff implemented support calls rather than referrals for misbehaving students. When a student misbehaves, an administrator comes to the classroom to handle the situation immediately, minimizing the loss of student learning time and classroom distraction.
Core
Curriculum
Core Curriculum Collaborative grade-level and department time allows
for the teachers to meet and support one another. Together they can support innovation
and provide the resources necessary to integrate standards-based curriculum into
daily practice. Teachers work together to provide early interventions, review
data. and make informed decisions.
