Data: Vista Verde School
Vista Verde has been utilizing School–wide Information Systems (SWIS) as a data base for consistently gathering, summarizing and reporting school climate to staff and parents at monthly staff meetings and with electronic messages. Office discipline referral forms are used as a reporting system for challenging behaviors.
Behavioral at–risk students are initially identified by reviewing the SWIS data. The team looks at behavior, location, time of day and motivation. A behavioral coach is assigned to support the teacher and student in initiating a strategic plan to be evaluated in 4–5 weeks. Students participate in a targeted group intervention (weekly reflection contract based on the function of the misbehavior and teaching of replacement behavior). For those students in the tertiary intervention process a functional assessment and positive behavior plan would be developed.
In addition, student academic progress is consistently and regularly monitored using district–wide accountability measures (Irvine on–line assessment–IOLA) and the student study team process. Through the district wide data–based system, Plato Learning inc., individual student academic progress can be reviewed on a daily basis.
To determine that this school’s culture of competence exists one can identify the behavioral expectations within five minutes of entering the school and randomly selected students can state the behavioral expectations with 100% accuracy. School–wide there has been a significant decline of office discipline referrals for major offenses. Target group interventions indicate 80% positive change. Positive change for students with individual intervention plans was a 100%.
