Overview: Vista Verde School

Vista Verde School is an established Positive Behavior Support (PBS) site whose goal is to refine and implement research–based prevention principles, which fosters a positive school climate through embedded organizational systems. It has been the identification of the following behavioral expectations that have been the catalyst for the school’s design and implementation: STAR (Safety First, There and Ready, Acting Responsibly, Respecting Self and Others).

Since making a commitment to be a PBS site, the school has been actively developing, implementing and restructuring intervention systems. At a school–wide level the school defines and promotes positive behavioral expectations, utilizes a school–wide teaching matrix, acknowledges students and community members who demonstrate understanding of the behavioral school culture and performs school–wide assemblies to promote and sustain intervention. At a classroom level, teachers focus on teaching individual classroom routines that are predictable and orderly, apply essential classroom management practices, and review best practice interventions for students who are academically struggling. On an individual student level, the school's secondary prevention system utilizes data to identify students who display chronic patterns of disruptive or dangerous behaviors and make decisions about intervention. Teacher and behavior coaches develop positive and effective plans with goals to increase positive behavior and academic support.
