Overview: Vista View Middle School

At Vista View, literacy is not a project but part of a compact with our students and school community. Seven years ago, we began our journey with the hope of developing effective strategies to assist struggling readers. Since then, our network of student support has evolved into an extensive reading intervention program that meets the needs of all students and provides support far beyond the basic program.

Our purpose it to eliminate the literacy gap and ensure all students attain proficiency by 2014 (NCLB). We are making progress in achieving this goal through a comprehensive assessment system to identify student needs, research-based intervention programs, schoolwide systems to monitor student progress, and a strategically crafted, rotating-block master schedule that affords students a minimum of 72 minutes of daily instruction in both reading and math. Students with the greatest reading skill deficiencies receive over two hours of daily intensive instruction to meet their literacy needs.
