The purpose of our literacy program and systems supporting student identification and program placement are communicated with all stakeholders. Parents are informed of our school intervention programs and processes in a variety of ways. Parents are invited to review program offerings and instructional materials at Title I and ELAC meetings. During Back to School Night and Open House activities, parents dialog with teachers regarding academic progress and review student work samples. Information regarding our literacy intervention programs are also shared with parents at conferences and Student Study Team meetings.

Parent communication is also essential for establishing strong home-school partnerships and support for our program. We promote consistent communication through parent conference week (held twice a year), the Binder Reminder student planner, an automated/bilingual home calling system, our Homework Hotline, weekly progress reports, monthly newsletters, our home-school compact, and the school website.

Parent and community involvment underpins our students’ academic success and social development. We sponsor The Parent Institute for Quality Education program at our school, providing weekly workshops in three languages. In conjunction with the Huntington Beach Adult School, we also host the Active Parenting for Teens program for parents in our local area. Corporate sponsors and local businesses support student achievement through donations for our schoolwide motivational program (PRIDE), which recognizes students for good grades and good citizenship.

Our school also enjoys strong support from parent and community volunteers, including our Parent Teacher Student Organization, School Site Council, English Learners Advisory Committee, and Volunteers of America. For example, this fall parents assembled Six Minute Solution kits for 34 teachers to support implementation of this schoolwide reading fluency program.
