About CST ELA Proficiency

The attached chart illustrates the level of English-language arts proficiency of all students and students with disabilities in California according to their test scores on the 2009 California Standards Test (CST) in the area of English language arts (ELA).

More information, as well as CST ELA proficiency for these and other grades and subgroups, are available from the California Department of Education’s website at http://star.cde.ca.gov/star2009.

The program which generated this chart is available for download on the CalSTAT website. This easy-to-use Excel file creates graphic reports based on whichever configuration of grades and subgroups you find most useful. Brief instructional movies are available, as well as a number of charting templates.

Reading the Chart

The chart shows CST ELA scores for California students at the 4th, 7th, and 10th grade levels. In the chart, there are two bars showing the levels of proficiency at each designated grade level.

Each color within the bars describes the percent of students within the subgroup at that proficiency level, indicated in the key to the left of the chart. Black numbers above each bar describes the total percent of students proficient and above, while the red numbers below describe the total percent of students less than proficient.

This chart displays proficiency levels from 2009 only. Charts describing earlier years are available online at www.calstat.org/CSTProficiencyCharting.html

When comparing 2008 scores with 2007, there were increases for both all students and students with disabilities. Students with disabilities in 4th and 7th grade saw the largest increases of these grades and subgroups.
